Cost-Saving Dos and Don'ts for Travel
At the end of 2018, I convinced my wife that bucket list trips could become a reality with proper planning, budgeting, and a specific strategies. Since then, we've saved thousands of dollars by being proactive, and planning ahead.
Here are my top three Dos and Don'ts for helping save costs for your desired getaway:
1) DO: Set a budget for your ideal family vacation. DON'T: Go into big debt for the trip.
2) DO: Sign up for a travel reward credit card to score a nice signup bonus.
DON'T: Sign up for credit cards if you don't pay them off in time, or if you find yourself spending more with plastic- this negates any benefit.
3) DO: Book your stay during the shoulder season, as this will save you some extra cash.
DON'T: Have precise arrival and departure dates for your holiday - especially if you're flying. By allowing yourself a couple of flexible days, you could save hundreds on airfare tickets.
BONUS TIP: Airbnb has been an excellent experience for us so far - and generally speaking, meet almost anyone's budget. Try them out if you haven't yet, instead of booking a hotel or condo.
BONUS TIP 2: If you plan on flying even just one time a year, sign up for a frequent flyer account for each airline you use. The points can add up, and sometimes are more valuable when you transfer over from Chase Ultimate Rewards.
